The Academy of Engineering Sciences of Serbia (AESS) is a scientific institution that brings together distinguished engineers and scientists from the field of engineering sciences with a goal of developing, stimulating and organizing engineering and technical sciences and their application in industry and other fields of activity.

The main goal of the Academy is to incite and direct fundamental, developmental and inovative research and other forms of scientific and specialist creativity within the engineering production and design, to direct and incite the system of engineering education and knowledge dissemination in all areas of engineering.

The Academy of Engineering Sciences of Serbia was established in 1998 in Belgrade under the name of Engineering Academy of Yugoslavia. Following the changes in society, it obtained and officially registered  its current name in October 2006.

Membership. In this moment (2010) the Academy of Engineering Sciences of Serbia has 91 full members, 86 corresponding members and 14 distinguished engineers, as well as 53 foreign members. All members of the Academy were elected according to high scientific and technical quality standards, by secret vote at the Academy assemblies.

The members of the Academy authored a number of scientific and technical papers, projects, patents and other forms of technical and scientific solutions that were published both in the country and abroad. This group of distinguished engineers and scientists is a unique multidisciplinary "forum of knowledge and experience" within Serbia, covering all fields of engineering, with potentials vastly surpassing other single scientific, engineering and similar institutions.

Tasks and activities. The main activity of the Academy is scientific, developmental and innovative research in technical sciences, i.e. in all fields of engineering. This is primarily expressed in

·         taking part in realization and appraisal of scientific, developmental and innovative projects as the basis of technological development of Serbia

·         Initiating and giving proposals for elaboration of the program of scientific and technological development of Serbia

·         Dissemination, promotion and popularization of science and scientific insights in society, especially among youth

·         Analysis of scientific discoveries and recommendations for their application in Serbia

·         Giving initiatives, creating proposals and offering opinions, advices and expert appraisals to the bearers of industrial, commercialm technological and overal development for the best possible implementation of current and long-term development of Serbia

·         Ensuring conditions for the most efficient system of academic education of engineers

·         Ensuring conditions for the most succesful scientific and creative engineering work

·         Performing development and testing in engineering, i.e. rendering projects, stodies, revisions of project design and other technical documentation

·         Publishing monographs, journals and other publications

·         Organizing scientific forums, conferences and other meetings in all fields of engineering sciences

·         Cooperation with other scientific and technical organizations, institutions and persons in the country and abroad.

Organization. Academy of Engineering Sciences of Serbia performs its activities through six departments for the next basic groups of science and engineering

·         Department of Biotechnical Engineering Sciences,

·         Department of Civil Engineering Sciences,

·         Department of Electrical Engineering Sciences,

·         Department of Mechanical Engineering Sciences,

·         Department of Mining and Geological Engineering Sciences and

·         Department of Technology, Metallurgy and Material Engineering Sciences.

Besides the department, the activities of the Academy proceed through committees that are engaged in specific multidisciplinary problems and questions of general or joint interest, as well as through workgroups and other forms of organization for particular questions.
